New York: The Worst Covid-19 Affected City In The World

" Living or working in a high rise building with shared public facilities (lifts, gyms, toilets and restaurants) increases the risk of catching Covid-19."

New York, a home of over 18 million people, is the most Covid-19 affected city in the world for the time being. Located further than 7,000 miles away from Wuhan of China where the first case was reported, New York has become the epicenter of the coronavirus outbreak. More than 360,000 cases and 28,000 deaths due to coronavirus have been recorded in New York. There are some facts that may contribute to the wide-spread outbreak there such as:

1. Around 65 million people visit New York every year

New York has welcomed 65.2 million visitors from overseas and other parts of the United States in 2018. It is one of the cities with the highest hotel-occupancy rate in the United States. Having a high number of visitors increases the city's exposure to Covid-19. Coronavirus is easily transmitted between people through bodily fluids, particularly droplets when the infected people cough or sneeze.

2. Almost 3 million people from China visited the United States in 2019

Since the first Covid-19 case was recorded in Wuhan on 1st of december 2019, coronavirus has infected more than 2 million people and caused over 150,000 deaths in more than 200 countries and territories. China has been the major force behind the global economic growth in the past decade. Chineses have been travelling around the globe for business and leisure. In 2019, there were 2.84 million visitors to the United States from China.

Due to lack of understanding of Covid-19, the United States government hasn't imposed travel bans on foreign visitors from affected countries until Monday, 16th of March, 2020.

4. Lack of Preparation and Anticipation

Like with most other affected countries, the United States is not fully prepared for the coronavirus outbreak. The are still shortage of test kits, medical equipments and workers to cope with the number of Covid-19 patients. Since there isn't a vaccine or drug to prevent or cure Covid-19, it is not surprising that the number of deaths due to coronavirus in the US has been high. Nevertheless, Americans are known for their hard work and resilience, surely this super-power nation will overcome the many challenges ahead.
