Resveratrol Protects Skin From Free Radicals and Oxidative Stress

Resveratrol is a polyphenol, natural compound found in some plants especially in the skin of red grapes and japanese knotweed roots. It protects plants from ultraviolet (UV) radiation, infections and harsh conditions.

The Health Benefits of Resveratrol

Believed to be one of the super-antioxidants, many clinical studies indicated that Resveratrol has potential health benefits such as increases insulin sensitivity, maintains brain functionality, protects against heart diseases and helps prevent cancer.

A clinical study in 50 menopausal women at the Center for Menopause Maggiore Hospital of Charity of Novara, Italy (Edizioni Minerva Medica, Minerva Ginecologica 2015 October), showed that Resveratrol reduced the intensity of hot flushes from severe and moderate to mild symptoms in 78.6% of menopausal women.

Resveratrol Helps Protect Skin Against Oxidative Stress, UV and Free Radical Damage

Numerous studies indicated that Resveratrol protects skin cells from free radicals, oxidative stress, UVA and UVB. It helps prevent collagen degradation and DNA damage induced by UV radiation.

The antioxidant properties of Resveratrol is much higher than most known antioxidants such as Vitamin A, C, E, Catechin in tea, Epicatechin in cocoa, Gallocatechin in adzuki beans, Gallic Acid in blueberries and Ellagic Acid in pomegranates.

A clinical study showed that Resveratrol has 17 times higher antioxidant activities than Idebenone (Richard A Baxter, MD; Journal of Cosmetic Dermatology, March 2008). Idebenone is the antioxidant used in some skincare products such as Elizabeth Arden Prevage Anti-Ageing Products.

Topical Resveratrol is also potentially effective in stimulating skin cells renewal, reducing hyperpigmentation and calming acne-prone skin.
