Rose oil and extract are usually extracted from the flower of Rosa Damascena or Rosa Centifolia plant. However, for therapeutic medicinal purposes, the oil and extract of Rosa Damascena seem to be superior than the ones of other rose plants.
The Chemistry of Rose Oil and Extract
Terpenes and Polyphenols are the two most important components of Rose oil and extract.
Terpenes are phytochemicals with strong analgesic and relaxing properties. Due to their terpenes content, Rose oil and extract are beneficial in the treatment of pain, anxiety and depression. Another well-known plant which contains terpenes is cannabis plant.
The main phenolic compounds in Rose oil and extract such as Glycosides, Flavonoids, Anthocyanins, are known to have strong antioxidant properties. In the recent studies, it has been reported that antioxidants, particularly flavonoids, may also have analgesic effects.
The polyphenols content of Rose oil and extract have been the major contributor to their therapeutic effects.
The Therapeutic Uses of Rose Oil and Extract
1. For The Treatment of Pain
The oil and extract of Rose flowers are often used for the treatment of chest and abdominal pains including menstrual cramp.
2. For The Treatment of Depression and Anxiety
Due to their relaxing and calming properties, Rose oil and extract may be used to ease depression and anxiety. Rose oil has been used widely in aromatherapy for many different purposes. Some studies highlighted the effectiveness of aromatherapy for the treatment of depression and anxiety symptoms.
3. For The Healthy Functioning of Brain
Rose extract seems to support the healthy functioning of brain. A recent study showed the potential use of Rose extract for the treatment of dementia.
4. For The Treatment of Diseases Caused by Virus and Bacteria
Some studies highlighted the antiviral and antibacterial properties of Rose extract, particularly those of Rosa Damascena. The antiviral effects of Rose extract may be beneficial for the treatment of HIV infection.
5. For The Treatment of Inflammation and Oxidative Stress
It has been reported that the extract of Rose Damascena has high antioxidant and anti-inflammatory activities that may be useful for the treatment of inflammation and free radical induced diseases including premature skin ageing and diabetes.
The Cosmetic and Skincare Uses of Rose Oil and Extract
Thanks to their antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties, both Rose oil and extract are great skincare ingredients. For best results, I prefer to use the rose extract from Rosa Damascena species, particularly the one from Bulgaria. Bulgaria is known to have the best soil and climate for growing rose plants.
