Why The Covid-19 Outbreak Continues To Spread

The Coronavirus outbreak is a threat to the global public health. Started in Wuhan, China, toward the end of 2019, the Covid-19 pandemic has quickly spread to more than 100 countries worldwide. By 31st of March 2020, there have been more than 850,000 cases and 42,000 deaths reported worldwide.

The Covid-19 Outbreak Continues to Spread Globally

The number of new Covid-19 cases and deaths continue to rise with time. At the current stage of this pandemic, there are two major contributing factors to the continued spread of the Covid-19 outbreak:

1. Covid-19 is a Highly Infectious Disease

Coronaviruses are known to be extremely contagious. During the coronavirus MERS outbreak in 2015, it was reported that one patient in a hospital passed on the virus to others, led to a total of 82 recorded infections. During the current Covid-19 outbreak, one British man got infected in Singapore and then unawarely passed on the virus to 11 people in the UK and France.

The Covid-19 outbreak has exploded in Europe and USA. USA is the new epicenter of the coronavirus outbreak. There have been higher number of reported cases outside China than ever recorded cases in China. With potentially tens of thousands of super spreaders freely moving around the globe, the Covid-19 outbreak is likely going to spread wider and further.

2. Lack of Urgency To Implement Extreme Measures

The Covid-19 outbreak is a pandemic, nevertheless, the World Health Organization and many countries are still reluctant to take extreme measures to slow down the outbreak. Most if not all countries still stick to a 14-day quarantine despite cases in China with a 24-day and 27-day incubation period. Many governments have yet to issue travel ban. Not every country has implemented a strict policy to thoroughly check the condition of passengers before they board flights or enter the country.

When dealing with a deadly infectious disease, it is not wise to play catch-up. It is always better to be early than sorry. No matter how much money and effort will be thrown after, we can never bring back those who lost their life to coronavirus. How many family and friends are grieving for their loved one(s). There is no vaccine and antiviral drug yet for Covid-19, so what are we all waiting for?
