" When left untreated, androgenic alopecia can cause irreversible baldness."
Hair loss has been linked to various conditions such as hormone imbalances, chronic inflammation, heart and autoimmune diseases. The most common hair loss type found in men and women is androgenic alopecia. When left untreated, it can cause irreversible baldness. There are four things you need to know about hair loss.
1. Dihydrotestosterone causes hair loss
Dihydrotestosterone (DHT) is a powerful sex hormone, stronger than testosterone. Both men and women produce testosterone in their body. About 10% of testosterone gets converted to dihydrotestosterone every day. It is not yet fully understood why in some individuals, DHT adversely affects the hair growth cycle. This androgen hormone causes hair follicles to shrink gradually. DHT keeps shortening the anagen phase, the phase when the hair follicles actively grow hair. Over time the hair follicles lose their ability to grow hair. Scientists suggest that androgenic alopecia may be due to autoimmune condition. However, further study is still needed to find the exact cause.
2. Rosemary extract reduces dihydrotestosterone levels in hair follicles
The conversion of testosterone to dihydrotestosterone in men's and women's body is made possible by the presence of 5-alpha-reductase enzyme. Studies showed that rosemary extract is 94.6% effective in reducing the activity of 5-alpha-reductase. Rosemary extract decreases dihydrotestosterone levels in hair follicles so much so that it keeps hair follicles active.
3. Peppermint oil is twice more effective than minoxidil in stimulating hair growth
Menthol, the main active component of peppermint oil has been shown to keep hair follicles active and healthy. Studies showed that peppermint oil improves the hair growth by almost twice than that of minoxidil. It increases both the number and the depth of hair follicles in men and women who suffer from hair loss.
4. Finasteride can adversely affect your body
Finasteride is often used in conjunction with minoxidil for hair loss treatment for men. Studies supported the efficacy of finasteride, nevertheless, there have been growing number of reported adverse side effects associated with the use of finasteride products such as problems with ejaculation, erectile dysfunction and lack of libido.
Between 2009 and 2018, the U.S. FDA have received 5,000 complaints about finasteride (Reuters, 29-September-2019). As published in the International Journal of Impotence Research (August, 2003), the common side effects of finasteride include problems of ejaculation (7.7%), problems with erection (15.8%) and lack of libido (5.4%). The US regulation requires all finasteride products to carry a warning about the adverse side effects that may last even after the products are no longer used.
