What is Ascorbyl Palmitate?

Ascorbyl palmitate is an oil-soluble vitamin C ester made by mixing ascorbic acid and palmitic acid together. It is commonly used in skincare products. However, studies showed that ascorbyl palmitate is not as effective as ascorbic acid, the natural vitamin C found in fruits and vegetables.

The controversy around Ascorbyl Palmitate

A study published in The Journal of Investigative Dermatology in 2002 suggested that ascorbyl palmitate promotes UVB-induced lipid peroxidation and cell toxicity. Contrary to its antioxidant effects, ascorbyl palmitate may intensify UV-induced skin damage.

Can you use ascorbyl palmitate skincare products during pregnancy and breastfeeding?

Yes, ascorbyl palmitate skincare products are safe for use during pregnancy and breastfeeding.

When is the best time to use ascorbyl palmitate skincare products?

Ascorbyl palmitate skincare products are safer for use at night when your skin is not exposed to UV rays. A study suggests that ascorbyl palmitate may cause UV-induced skin damage.
