What is Rosacea?
Rosacea is a chronic skin condition with symptoms including redness, frequent blushing, burning and stinging sensations, acne-look spot and visible blood vessels. Usually affects women with fair skin, aged thirty to sixty. Although it is quite rare, men can be affected by the condition more severely.
Rosacea is often mistakenly linked to acne inflammation, however, both are different and not related at all. Rosacea symptoms usually worsens with time and can become permanent if left untreated.
How to cure Rosacea?
Unfortunately there is no cure yet for Rosacea. This chronic skin inflammation remains poorly understood. However there are some clues on how to manage and reduce the severity of the symptoms.
What are the common triggers for Rosacea?
Sun exposure is known as the biggest trigger for rosacea symptoms. The condition is often worse when the skin is exposed to sun. The other common triggers include stress, extreme temperature, wind, intense physical activity/exercise, alcohol, spicy foods, hot drinks and certain skincare products.
There are some cosmetic and skincare ingredients that may trigger Rosacea symptoms such as:
- witch hazel
- propylene glycol
- sodium laurel/laureth sulfate
- glycolic acid
- salicylic acid
- lactic acid
- retinol and retinoic acid
Limiting the exposure to these commonly known triggers is the key in managing Rosacea. If the condition worsens, seek a proper medical help without further delay.
How to look after the skin for those affected by Rosacea
Those affected by Rosacea are highly recommended to look after their skin properly. Use products that are specially formulated for sensitive skin. Avoid any waterproof product. Clean your face in the morning and evening using a gentle rinse-off cleanser. Use cool or lukewarm water to wash your skin. Unless recommended by your dermatologist, avoid using exfoliator or scrub at all.
