What is Milia?
Nicknamed as milk spots, milia (the plural of milium) are small cysts that usually appear in cluster on the face. Although they can appear anywhere, milia commonly appear on the skin around the eyes and on the cheeks.
What Causes Milia?
Milia form when the dead skin cells or keratin get trapped under your skin.
How to Get Rid of Milia?
In most cases, milia will disappear on their own within weeks or months. Squeezing and poking at them can damage your skin. If you want them to disappear fast, you can get them removed by a qualified beauty professional.
How to Prevent Milia?
Having a good daily skincare routine is a must. There are 3 things that you need to do every day to prevent and get rid of milia:
1. Cleanse Your Face Properly
Cleanse your face every morning and evening. Always remove makeup before you go to bed. In the evening, double cleanse your face. First, use a makeup remover to remove all traces of makeup and dirt. Then use a water-rinse-off gentle cleanser to purify your skin and get rid of the oily residue. Makeup remover and cleansing cream often leave an oily residue on the skin that clogs the pores and causes milia to form.
2. Exfoliate Regularly
Regular exfoliation removes dead skin cells and helps prevent milia. Milia often appear around the eye area which make the regular face exfoliators too harsh to use on. Choose a face serum which has been formulated with n-acetyl glucosamine like AGEless Serum. Unlike alpha hydroxy acids (AHAs) and beta hydroxy acid (BHA) which are too irritating for use around the eyes, n-acetyl glucosamine is very gentle and effective in removing dead skin cells and signs of ageing around the eyes. AGEless Serum also contains 24 karat gold and niacinamide to protect your skin from various ageing factors. For best results, apply the serum every morning and night to freshly cleansed skin.
3. Avoid Using Comedogenic Skincare Products
Silicone and its derivatives such as dimethicone, cyclomethicone and cyclopentasiloxane are known to be comedogenic. They clog your pores; trapping oil, dead skin cells and keratin under your skin. Overtime, this causes milia. Avoid using any face serum or moisturiser that contains silicone and its derivatives.
