The Therapeutic Components in Blue Chamomile
Also known as german chamomile (Chamomilla Recutita), blue chamomile contains chamazulene, alpha bisabolol and bisabolol oxides. Chamazulene is a blue-colour substance with excellent antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. Bisabolol is a phytocompound with anti-irritant, anti-inflammatory and anti-microbial properties.
The Benefits of Blue Chamomile For Your Skin
In skincare, the essential oil extracted from the flowers of blue chamomile is usually added into the formula to soothe the skin and calm irritation. Blue chamomile essential oil is one of the best skincare ingredients for sensitive skin.
1. Blue chamomile helps prevent skin inflammation
Studies showed that blue chamomile contains apigenin, luteolin, glycosides, bisabolol and ferulic acid; phytochemicals which help prevent inflammation in the skin.
2. Blue chamomile protects skin against oxidative damage
Clinical tests indicated that the apigenin in blue chamomile is a strong antioxidant, capable of preventing oxidative damage caused by reactive oxygen species (ROS) including free radicals. The antioxidant activities of blue chamomile are greater than those of marigold (calendula) and feverfew.
3. Blue chamomile soothes sensitive skin and speeds up healing
Studies showed that blue chamomile can be used effectively for the treatment of eczema. Blue chamomile soothes sensitive skin and calms irritation while also speeds up skin healing. The soothing and therapeutic effects of blue chamomile essential oil are likely due to the bisabolol, chamazulene and flavonoid contents.
